Introduction
The Association of Kenya Insurers in conjunction with McLarens Young International successfully organised a one day seminar on Friday 28th November 2008 at the Voyager Beach Resort, Mombasa. The Theme of the seminar was “Cargo Transportation, Storage & Security Today Concerns. This is an annual event organised by the Association and the Scheme Managers to update marine underwriters on development that have taken place in the year and to discuss issues of mutual benefits.
Objective of the Seminar
The overall objective of the seminar was to bring members together to brainstorm on issues affecting the Cargo Surveillance, and get insights on what goes on during the process of cargo clearance.
Mr Mahesh Mavji opened the seminar while the Convenor of the Marine & Aviation Committee, Mr Njoroge Mbuchucha took the particpants through the objectives of the Scheme and the benefits of using the scheme. The primary objective of the Cargo Surveillance Scheme is to deter and detect losses while its other objective is to protect the common interest of member companies of AKI against loss of cargo or damage to cargo
Participants
There were forty eight (48) participants drawn from member companies and stakeholders.

The three papers presented were:
- Opportunities & Challenges of Cargo Handling and Storage By Edna Ngwatu of Kenya Ports Authority
- Recent Development in Cargo Clearance, Storage and Transportation by the The Executive Director of KIFWA Mr J Mathenge
- Safety & Security of Marine Cargo Emerging Issues by the Director General of Kenya Maritime Authority, Ms Nancy Karigithu.

In the afternoon, participants visited KPA and Consolbase to familiarise themselves with cargo discharge and clearance procedures. The Convenor of Marine Technical Committee and AKI representative visited fishing establishments/boat Clubs in Mombasa after the seminar to explore the potential of marine hull business along the coastline.
