IPV6 For Insurance Industry - November 2008

INTRODUCTION
The Internet forms a critical part of the ICT industry and as such a stable local Internet infrastructure is key in creating an enabling business environment in the country. It is also a well known fact that the glue that holds together the Internet comprises of domain names and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and that IPv6, the new generation of IP addresses will form the pillar of the Next Generation Internet. Due to the imminent problem of the depletion of current Internet platform â€" IPV4, as a country, we should plan on transitioning to IPv6 to prevent the effects of IPv4 depletion and reap the benefits of this new advanced technology.

ABOUT KENIC

Kenya Network Information Centre (KENIC) is a Non-Profit Public-Private-Partnership organisation whose mandate is to manage the entire dot KE domain name space, Kenya’s unique, authentic and globally recognised identity on the Internet; and represents the country in the Global Internet Forums as the .KE Country Code Top Level Domain Custodians.

IPV6 OVERVIEW AND APPRECIATION FOR AKI MEMBERS
The AKI Secretariat has identified the need for its members to appreciate the trends in the Internet technology, and especially IPV6.

IPV6 INITIATIVES BY KENIC

KENIC has put in place several IPv6 initiatives. These include:

• Making presentations and sensitizing the ICT Stakeholders on the need for IPv6 deployment at various ICT forums, locally and internationally;
• Setting up of an IPv6 testbed and successful deployment of IPv6 on the KENIC network;
• Organizing two (2) IPv6 sensitisation seminars that attracted more than 200 local participants from various sectors and
• In Liaison with the Africa Region Internet Registry (AfriNic) organised an IPv6 hands-on workshop that saw the launch of Africa Chapter of IPv6 Deploy Project, and training of over 100 local ICT professionals on the deployment of IPv6.

The half day programme for the IPV6 overview and appreciation for AKI Members tackled the following:-
  • What is IPv6 and how is it different from IPV4
  • Current Global IP Resources Scenario
  • Why Migrate to IPv6
  • How to Migrate to IPv6
  • What is required and Costs to Migrate to IPv6
  • Current Global and National Initiatives
  • Practical Session â€" Setting up and Assigning an IPv6 Addresses
