To extend the seminars and workshops to branches, the Secretariat decided that all technical seminars held in the last quarter of this year will be replicated in some branches. It was with this in mind that the marine seminar was held on 4th December 2009 at Sun N Sand Beach Resort, Mombasa.
Three papers were presented at the seminar:
1. Piracy Along East African Coastline by Charles Satchwell;
2. Merchant Shipping Act, 2009 by Veronica Maina on behalf of Director General, Kenya Maritime Authority; and
3. Highlights of Marine Cargo Surveillance Scheme Operations by J Kamomoe, Director, Oceanic Marine Surveyors.
Thirty eight (38) members attended the seminar. The presentations were well received by the participants. The participants commended AKI for holding the seminar in Mombasa and requested for more seminars in future.
It was recommended that Kenya Maritime Authority and AKI should carry out public education campaign/workshops to sensitize the public on the existence of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2009, importance of insurance to boat owners and passengers, safety guidelines, rights and obligations of passengers, registration and licensing requirements and procedures.
