The Association of Kenya Insurers held the annual road safety award ceremony on 30th October 2009, at the Laico Regency Hotel. This event is aimed at recognizing those who have had a major contribution towards road safety. The theme of this year's event was "Dumisha Usalama Barabarani".
The Association made an appeal to everyone to participate in road safety.
The key note address was expected to be given by the Minister for Roads, Hon. Franklin Bett. However, due to an emergency at the Coast, he could not make it to the function. He was represented by Dr Nyangaga, a Director of the Kenya Roads Board.
At the beginning of his address, he led the crowd into observing one minute silence for all those who have died as a result of road clashes. He urged the public to observe traffic rules and to be cautious on the road. He observed that most of the accidents mainly occur as a result of human error. The need to change behavior was retaliated.
The AKI Chairman on the other hand emphasized the need to harmonize road safety efforts and requested the National Road Safety Council to be at the forefront in mobilizing all the stakeholders to take part in road safety initiatives. He also called upon the Ministry of Roads to continue with the effort of improving roads network in the country, and improve the drainage systems particularly during this period that El Nino is expected.
