Kenya Breast Health Programme

AKI has for the second year running been able to support this course by making a donation to the Kenya Breast Health Programme (KBHP) to facilitate their activities of leading Kenyans in observing the Breast Cancer Awarness month. The donation will be used to create awareness and fundraising activities such as musical concerts, walks, education forums, dinners, golf tournaments and free breast screening clinics throughout the country.
The theme of this year was dubbed “The Pink Caravan Campaign, How Pink Can You Go?” which aimed at increasing the visibility of the pink ribbon while gauging the publics level of information on breast cancer and challenging them on to do more towards the awareness creation. The idea behind the Pink Caravan was to encourage more Kenyans to join the Breast Health Programme as they continue to move towards their goal, which is to significantly reduce the Breast Cancer mortality rate around Kenya.

Globally, breast cancer incidence is increasing and those affected are getting younger and younger. The recent statistics from the Nairobi Cancer Registry indicate that between the years 2000 and 2006, women between 35 and 55 years were highly affected by breast cancer and that breast cancer was the most common cancer among women accounting for 21% of all the cancers diagnosed with 1% of the men being affected.

To facilitate in these activities, AKI donated Kshs. 100,000 to the Kenya Breast Heath Programme. At hand to do the donation was the Convener of the Public Relations Committee, Mr. Moses Kimani, a Member of the Public Relation Committee Mr. Maina Mukoma.

AKI also took part in the launch of the campaign by participating in the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. The Secretariat was represented and the walk by Mrs. Mary Wahome and Mrs. Angelica Nzioka.
