Corporate Social Responsibility - Medical Camp
A.Background.
This was the first time the Association organized a medical camp. The camp was held on 3rd September 2011 at Kambiti in Makuyu, Muranga County.
B. Objectives
• The main objective of the camp was to raise awareness on common diseases and to offer treatment to the local community.
•To provide medical assistance.
•Educate the public on selected medical conditions and nutrition.
•Get the insurance companies involved at the community level.
C.Human Resources.
The following participated at the camp.
•Makuyu Health Centre and Murang'a South health facilities.
•PCEA Kikuyu Hospital Eye Unit.
•AKI and various Insurance companies.
•Kenya Diabetes Management & Information Centre.
•Gina Din Corporate Communications (GDCC).
•Volunteers from Kenya Dental Association.
•Kambiti Pry School.
•Community Health Workers.
D. Camps Focus
The camp focused on the following ailments and Activities
•Diabetes screening for those above 25 years or with risk factors
•Education on diabetes, nutrition & oral health
•Hypertension screening and education
•General ailments especially infections and respiratory conditions
•Eyes check up and surgical intervention
•Dental Check up
•Nutritional Counselling
•Diabetic foot check up and treatment of wounds.
•De-worming.

I.General Consultations.
These included:
•General malaise – stress related
•Broad spectrum infections – throat, ears, skin, etc.
J. Challenges.
•Referral cases that required further intervention were acted upon.
K. Outcome and Achievements.
•Everyone was attended to.
•A 9 years old boy diagnosed with diabetes and cataract. Counseled on insulin therapy and eye surgery scheduled was for 26th September 2011.
•A 25 years old lady (Angela Gathoni) diagnosed with swelling of the left lower mandible. Requires surgery at the University of Nairobi (Dental School) at a cost of Kshs.150, 000. Medical underwriters who participated were requested to assist.
•Very orderly crowd hence service delivery was fast.
•Cataracts surgeries scheduled for Monday, 26th September at the Kikuyu Eye Unit
•Drugs that remained were given to Makuyu Health Centre.
•Committed medical personnel.
•Remaining drugs given to Makuyu Health Centre except for the 6 vials of insulin returned to DMI Centre.
The function was attended by the area MP, AKI Chairman, PR Committee Convenor, DMI and AKI staff. Nine member companies participated and contributed Ksh. 50,000/= each.
In addition, Jubilee Insurance Company provided drugs for the camp. The Association partnered with the Diabetic Management and Information Centre (DMI) to provide medics and logistics. Notable participants were Makuyu and Muranga Health Centres, PCEA Kikuyu Hospital Eye Unit, Kenya Dental Association and Community health workers.
The camp focused on diabetes and hypertension screening, general ailments, eye check-up and surgical intervention, dental check-up, de-worming and nutritional counseling.
A total of 700 patients were screened, treated, given drugs and referred where possible.
By and large the camp was successful and appreciated by the community and the Member of Parliament for the area. The PR Committee and the Secretariat has budgeted for another camp in October this year. The Planning will start in due course.
